Cincinnatians love to sit outdoors and entertain with family and friends. It’s in our character to not only enjoy one’s company, but to also enjoy the beautiful, natural surroundings amongst us at the same time. Now that spring is in full bloom and the outdoor furniture has been brought out of hibernation (or perhaps you’ve splurged on a new outdoor dining set or a comfortable, outdoor entertainment patio set), you realize you’re lacking that stylish, outdoor area rug to tie it all together. Consider these points when making your outdoor rug purchase …

Materials: Natural fibers, such as jute, hemp, sisal or seagrass are very strong and sustainable. They also add a lot of texture and depth to an outdoor space. Because of the durability of these fibers, they work very well in high-traffic areas and can handle all weather conditions.

Patterns: Drab browns are OUT! Patterns, bright colors, geometric designs, solids and stripes are IN! Depending on the space you’re putting the rug will determine the overall look and feel. You don’t want something that will be too overwhelming, but you also don’t want something to be too drab. Look for colors and patterns that are complimentary to your outdoor space, sense and style.

Create Zones: Create ‘zones’ or areas for different activities for the entire family. You can define a conversation area by placing outdoor furniture around the rug, create a play area for the little ones or design your outdoor eating space with a bold, geometric rug under your table.

Go Big: If you have the space, flaunt it with a large-scale rug to create a comfortable, outdoor living area. You’ll add not only warmth to the outdoor space, but you’ll make the section feel more like an indoor living area. If you don’t have the space, or maybe you need to be a bit more budget-conscious, a small rug with a great pattern or great colors can make all the difference. Creating an interesting space can leave a lot to the imagination!
