Wood Floor Pattern and Layout Trends of 2020

When you hear ‘pattern’ hardwood, the out-of-date ‘parquet’ of the 70’s instantly sneaks into the minds of people. However, patterns and angles are not all created equal and are becoming hotter as we speak!

Chevron & Herringbone Patterns

Chevron and herringbone patterns are very similar, yet very distinct from each other. Chevron floors require the planks to be angled just right so that when they come together, they form a perfect point.

Herringbone floors are similar to a chevron pattern, except the planks connect at a 90-degree angle (think zigzag) – this means less cutting, less labor and less wasted materials, making Herringbone a much more accessible pattern of choice.

Longer planks in trendier chevron and herringbone flooring layouts add interest and depth to the eye. This may not be the trend to do your entire home in. However, long entryways, hallways and bathrooms can look spectacular.

Diagonal Vinyl Floors

Like artwork, homeowners want something unique on their floors, especially when they just want something that is visually stunning. Laying hardwood on the diagonal gives your floors a unique, expensive look, and can also make a room appear larger.

It does cost more in materials (and often installation), but the outcome is beautiful, yet still uncommon enough to maintain its uniqueness.

Wide Plank and Mixed Width Plank Floors

Wider planks can make your room look larger than it really is. They can also make any room in your home look modern, elegant and expensive.

Mixing widths in your hardwood floors is also becoming more noticed and used in homes. This adds interest to your floors, giving them an extra pop and drawing attention.

Mixed Species Floors

Who would have thought that you could install hickory, white oak and maple in one floor? Mixing your species not only adds interest, but really individualizes your home. The contrast between the species will not only stand out but can open up space and warm the rooms.
